It really is heartbreaking to watch the local news on TV these past few weeks.

First there came Ondoy (Ketsana) last week submerging majority of Metro Manila in murky flood waters claiming hundreds of deaths and destroying billions worth of properties.

Then just a few days after came Pepeng (Parma) hitting badly the whole of Northern and Central Luzon not only bringing strong winds, destroying crops, roads and properties but also caused massive flooding and landslides…and sadly, more deaths.

My heart goes out to those who are caught in this deep misery. We may not be directly affected now but I know in no time, we’ll surely feel its effects. The most notable of which are inflation and possible food shortage in the months to come since most of our crops come from Northern Luzon. But more than thinking of these effects, may we address first the immediate help needed by our brethren from the North. May we extend to them the same fast relief efforts we gave to the Metro Manila victims. Seeing the horrible scenes of landslides, it hit me that their fate was worse. Properties may be destructed but one can still manage to save his life by swimming through the flood water but with landslides, once it hits, lives vanish in an instant. No time to run else where for safety.

I deeply pray that my relatives up North are all safe and sound. My Dad’s hometown is in Pangasinan, 90% of which is submerged including Balungao where most of his relatives are based. My Dad put up a buy and sell of palay business there and it’s probably a blessing that he shut it down several years back and went back to working overseas instead. Otherwise, we could have been worrying to death for him by now. He still hasn’t sold the empty warehouse though so I wonder how badly affected it is.

On the other hand, my maternal relatives are mostly from Isabela. I got a news that my Uncle and Grandma are just okay. Sadly, their crops have gone wasted by the strong winds and flood of the typhoon. But nevertheless, their safety is far more important.

Just terrible.

May we all overcome this crisis fast as we anchor deep our faith in Him.

Watching the news since Saturday has been bittersweet. I feel blessed and thankful that my whole family was spared but my heart breaks seeing those who were badly affected by the massive flooding of typhoon Ondoy’s rains. Deaths, destroyed properties, hungry and stranded people…I can’t help but ask how could this typhoon be so cruel.

It’s disheartening hearing and reading my friends’ personal ordeals. Looking at the pictures of their flooded homes – submerged vehicles, floating refrigerators, completely drenched furnitures, sofas, and even gadgets like computers and hard drives, my mind can’t even fathom how they’d be able to start anew. But then, despite all these material losses, there’s still a thousand reasons to be thankful for. The greatest is that we’re all still alive.

It has been raining non-stop since last night as typhoon “Ondoy” (international code name Ketsana) continues to hit Luzon and flooding the majority of the Metro Manila streets and nearby areas. At around 2 PM this noon, the husband and I braved the rains outside and peeped how are our neighbors residing in the lower part of our vicinity doing. These are the depressing pictures taken from my camphone:

Submerged cars and houses

This is the downhill and lowest part of our street. How high the flood is? Enough to touch the power and cable lines.

Furniture and other household stuffs evacuated

Bayanihan spirit. People use ropes and improvised floats to pull the stranded neighbors out of their completely submerged homes.
