A quick glance at the calendar dawned on me that Valentines is just two weeks away. It’s not that I don’t look forward to it that much anymore. I don’t know if you’ll agree with me but Valentines has more mushy effect and is more anticipated by those dating, unmarried couples. I mean, my husband and I still do celebrate it by having a special dinner elsewhere but sometimes we forgo the exchange gift part. It’s not that the emotions are flaming less but it’s just a mutual agreement that gifts are not really required, practicality wise. Of course, I do welcome surprises..I love them, in fact. But the bottom line is, there should be no expectations since there are more family-related priorities to focus on.

It is in this light that I say it’s much different when you’re still in the dating stage. I remember, our first Valentines was the sweetest..and most memorable if I may add. We were just students way back then and it’s overwhelming to know later that he scrimped on his allowance a lot so he could shower me with lots of gifts: a huge bouquet of flowers, my favorite chocolates, the sweetest Valentines card and a cute teddy. Perhaps, if he was working already that time, he could have applied for a cash advance and gifted me more probably with more lavish and extravagant stuffs. A cash advance is indeed a great life saver for gents who are broke in these economic hard times. But then, as simple they were, I was more than satisfied and grateful for what I received. After all, Valentines is not and should not revolve around material things anyway. It’s the season to celebrate love and that’s all that matters.

And why, all of a sudden, I’m yakking about mushy things now? The husband’s not home yet and as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Just like his bestsellers: The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, Message In A Bottle, The Rescue, The Guardian..his latest novel, At First Sight, a sequel to True Believer, is character-driven, full of emotions and yes…ended with an expected “unexpected death” climax. I’m a sucker with happy endings but I just love how Sparks turn sad endings to good conclusions from which one can extract realistic and life realizations.

“How well do we really know the ones we love?” That’s the question the story portrays..it includes trust, betrayal, acceptance, endings that bring new beginnings, tragedies that lead to encompassing joy, epitome of everlasting love. I so actually can relate as this story relates how newlyweds undergo tests of marriage and parenthood with the joys and difficulties that they have to endure. No..I’m not doing a review here as I’m not good at making one. Just read them na lang. I’m just fascinated that I got to finish two stories simultaneously of my favorite novelist. Thanks to Powerbooks’ sale promo last month. So there…just to let you know that I’m doing other things than digiscrapping, for those of you who’ve been wondering about my “so much” fascination with it.
