First, let me apologize for not having any personal snapshots of last night’s simple celebration. One, we were too lazy to bring our “Nikky” DSLR. Two, we were dead hungry that we wouldn’t have time to spare for a quick food photoshoot. But to make my post more enjoyable and enticing (pardon if I’ll tempt you to storm the kitchen and grab some food), I have snagged a few photos from the restaurant’s website.

We didn’t have lavish date plans actually as our Sunday was extremely busy with other non-Valentine related errands. When we got home in the afternoon at 5 pm, we both instantly craved for pasta and pizza. Originally, it would just be the two of us but knowing how the little one loves pasta, we tagged him and his nanny along, thus, it was a Valentines Family Dinner.

We didn’t wander further as Don Henrico’s West Ave is just a few minutes drive from our place. All in all, we had a pleasant experience dining in this resto just like the first time. Despite it was already 7 pm when we arrived, there was an ample parking space, reservation was swift and we were seated right away at Table # 4. Seeing that we have a toddler, the staff offered us a high chair immediately.

We were given the menu and these satisfied our tummies:
1. Don Henrico’s Thin Onion Rings
2. Philly Steak Cheese Pizza with thin crust
3. Lasagna
4. Fettuccini Ala King
5. Buffalo Wings

Food started to fill our table in less than 15 minutes, I think, since the time our order was taken. They must have carefully and strategically anticipated the volume orders on special occasions like this. Their service was fairly fast despite the numerous diners continuously coming in at a peak hour (7 PM).

We feasted and satisfied our taste buds down to the last spoon. Need not comment anymore how great the food was because big tummies (including that of the little one) and the husband’s guilt and thoughts about discount diet pills while eating are fine proofs that they were all indeed scrumptious.

The little one was also given a bunch of Valentines red balloons (one of their decors) without us requesting probably after seeing how my balloon lover son fascinated over them. We also got a free red Don Henrico’s heart pillow after meeting their required minimum order amount for the Valentines promo.

It’s just 6:10 PM. My stomach grumbles but since it’s too early to eat dinner, there’s only one thing left for me to do for now to keep my sanity intact and my tummy psyched. That is to think about food.

Since Christmas is just practically around the corner, let me blab about Christmas Recipes and the feast that I might come up for our Noche Buena. My in-laws requested that I cook my own Carbonara version. They’ve tasted it recently when I cooked some to satisfy the husband’s cravings for snacks. By the way, let me just share that I’m not a good cook. Actually, I rarely cook. Don’t get me wrong, I love to learn and get skilled but what can I do if I have an ever doting Mother in Law who expertly does the cooking for everyone else here in the house. You see, even my sister-in-law do not bother snag the kitchen crown from her. Besides, she perfectly understands us that we are both busy with our home-based jobs.

Anyway, back to the Noche Buena feast topic, And so I’m tasked to do the pasta. As for my sister-in-law, I think she’s planning to bake some cake and goodies that she can also gift her friends so she’s searching on the web for a simple Fruitcake Recipe. Luckily, she found an easy to follow recipe at 1001recipe.com. Not only it is easy but it also has a vast collections of Healthy Recipes. You can never go wrong with the recipes because all other pertinent information such as number of servings, prep and cooking time, and easiness rating data are all available on the side bar.

Take note also that some of the recipes are very flexible. For instance, the fruitcake recipe can be a little bit modified to make it a fruit muffin.

Okay wait…it seems that my psyching technique isn’t actually working. All the more that it made me hungry.

Early dinner is the only solution, I bet.

I was supposed to give my son a cheese sandwich for his breakfast one morning last week. To my surprise, the unopened wheat bread we just bought from the grocery a few days earlier suddenly has grown molds already. It’s just weird because it ain’t supposed to be expired yet as noted on the expiry date tag.

I was about to shoot it right away to the trash bin but my SIL stopped me to do so. She said that it’s “sayang” and they (she and MIL) will just eat the scraped part.

How about you? Do you also eat scraped breads that are molded?

Or, you’re like me who doesn’t want to endanger my family’s tummy and health that’s why I’d rather dispose it. Molds are dangerous as they can cause food poisoning or infections. Besides, isn’t it more “sayang” if you end up getting hospitalized because of food poisoning?

Here’s a portion of the article I read from yumsugar that convinces me more to never eat moldy breads:

Any food completely covered in mold should be tossed. Discard cooked meats, poultry, casseroles, and grains — generally, leftovers — if mold is detected, because they have a high moisture content, and contamination has permeated below the food’s surface. Toss baked goods, because their porousness puts them at high risk. Also nix delicate produce, preserves, yogurt, sour cream, and softer cheeses.

The big red chili suggests that this dish is really spicy. Laing (taro leaves) is a Filipino dish native to Bicol. It is a spicy and creamy dish of taro leaves, pork, and chili peppers cooked in coconut milk. So if spicy foods are your thing, this is worth a try.

This is what you need and the procedure to cook it:

25 pieces gabi (taro) leaves, dried and shredded
1/2 kilo pork, diced
1/4 cup shrimp bagoong
5 cloves garlic, minced
2 red onions, chopped
2 tablespoons ginger, minced
5 jalapeno pepper, sliced
1 cup coconut cream (katang gata)
2 cups coconut milk (gata)
1/2 teaspoon monosodium glutamate (MSG)
2 tablespoons of oil
1 teaspoon salt

In a casserole, sauté garlic, ginger and onions then add the pork.
Mix in the gabi leaves.
Pour in the coconut milk (gata) and bring to a boil then simmer for 15 minutes.
Add jalapeno, bagoong, salt and MSG and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Add the coconut cream and continue to simmer until oil comes out of the cream.
Serve hot with plain white rice.

Bring out a fan to keep you cool and a hanky to wipe your sweat away as it could really be hot and spicy.

This is the rice porridge with mashed squash (thus, it’s color yellow) that my son had for lunch a few days ago. He liked it so much that it vanished in an instant. Here in the Philippines, our rice porridge is called “lugaw” (the Filipino name for congee). Very similar to Cantonese style congee, lugaw is typically of a thicker consistency, retaining the shape of the rice while achieving the same type of texture. It is most of the time boiled with strips of fresh ginger. Other flavors may be added according to taste. Lugaw also makes as first solid foods for infants because of its easy to swallow texture.

In the early 2000s, the South Beach Diet was quickly popularized to be an effective means of losing weight. Do you know that initially, the purpose of the diet was to prevent heart disease as conducted by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston and dietician Marie Almon as an alternative to low-fat approaches such as the Ornish Diet and the Pritikin Diet? In an instant, we witnessed celebrities practicing this diet and proved that it was really effective.

But do you know that such principle of replacement of “bad carbs” and “bad fats” with “good carbs” and “good fats” has been long introduced in the 1980s? It is called Medifast diet and was introduced by Dr. William Vitale. It is free to join any Medifast program. The only thing Medifast charges for is its food. A lot has testified how Medifast works real good although the meals can really be costly. But with Medifast coupons, Medifast meals are made affordable even giving free meals when availing their VIP Program.

Ever since we tasted this heavenly cake dessert, we make it a point that this is the number one in the list of pasalubongs to take home from Baguio. This refrigerator cake called Chona’s Delight is named after the brilliant Aling Chona, the owner of Tea House Restaurant and Bakeshop located along Session Road. This establishment is one of the oldest chow place for locals and tourists craving for noodle snacks, coffee, bread and sinfully delicious cakes such as the above pictured Chona’s Delight. Tea House now also has a branch at nearby SM Baguio where we bought 5 small tubs of Chona’s Delight for take home during our annual Christmas vacation in the city of Pines last year. Three of the five small tubs were exclusively devoured by me..yes, that’s how delectable and addicting this cake is that you would need the best appetite suppressant to stop. It consists of layers of rich chocolate cake frosting and fillings of creamy custard and whipped cream. Don’t be fooled with the rich, dark chocolatey look but this doesn’t taste tooth-cringing sweet at all. In fact, you can really even consume all by yourself in one sitting the small tub which they sell at Php 105/container.
