For most students, school will start next week. During my schooling age from elementary to college, the excitement I felt going back to school was tremendous. New teachers, new classmates, new uniforms, new stuffs. The last two were the most that I was excited about and I bet most of the students share the same sentiments with me. Definitely, I was also thrilled about the new learning that would be imparted to me.

With the neverending advancement of technology, I could say that the students of today are indeed luckier as they benefit so much from the computer and internet for their school works. During my time (not so long ago), I recall that my classmates and I spent several hours of research from dusty and old book in our library after class hours. The internet wasn’t that widely used yet among students and renting in internet shops was very costly. The first time I ever logged on the web, rental fee was at Php 54 per hour. With this, we were lured to go for means that were inexpensive or as much as possible, free.

In this decade when internet is considered a staple and a regular utility in the house (just like phone, power, water and cable TV), researching for school assignments, projects and term papers are definitely a lot easier and efficient. With just one click, you have an instant project with the help of Google.

Such A Big Feat.

I couldn’t be any prouder of my High School friends. A number of them are doctors now and enjoying so dearly their chosen field. Taking up Medicine and studying for almost a decade just to be a licensed doctor is truly a big feat. They spent endless sleepless nights, braved nerve-wracking exams and consultant interview questions and browsed thousands of thick medical books. With all honesty, even though I dreamed of becoming a doctor when I was little, I don’t think I can go through the same travail. Just the thought of consultant medical interview gives me the shivers. Suffice to say that I’m not meant to be a doctor but destined to become something else.

Anyway, most of them are now general practitioners and now aligning their specialization plans. Some are undergoing a consultant interview course while some are working on their US Medical Licensing Exam applications. It is one from doctor friend that I first heard about the Oxford Medical, a medical training company that teach doctors various skills for competitive consultant interview. She says that she’ll take a course from this company in order for her to sell her skills, knowledge and attributes in a more impressive manner.

In three months time, my youngest sibling will graduate from college. They just went back to the university yesterday after taking advantage of the holiday break. He made sure that he’s rested and relaxed very well over the break because he’s certain that the coming and remaining months will be their busiest. I can recall that during my last semester also in college, I barely had a number of good hours of sleep. Tons of book reports, two feasibility studies, and two theses…those were the most taxing tasks we had to endure then all at one time. She’ll Pursue Master’s

I just got offline from a YM chat with a childhood nurse friend who’s now based in South California. We’ve talked about her civil wedding that took place a couple of months ago and her would-be church wedding here in the Philippines next year. It really is great to hear that she’s doing well not only as a wife but in her career as well. As much as possible, they would like to defer their baby plans because of the impending church wedding and also, she’ll be enrolling soon in an online university for her master’s degree program in nursing. I quite didn’t get the name of where she’ll pursue her studies but I think she mentioned Western Governors University. She says, this school is popular for the high quality online education they provide through their comprehensive course offerings like the online nursing degree. Their healthcare degree programs are now accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). My friend deems enrolling in an online university perfect especially that she can’t give up her hospital work and doing it online provides much ease, comfort and flexibility.

When I entered college, I had this goal to graduate with an Accounting major degree and consequently become a Certified Public Accountant later on. The first one and a half years of my pre-commerce years were directed on that path until I decided that accounting seemed not for me. So instead, I spent my majoring years taking up Business Administration, upon my Dad’s encouragement and influence, too. I perfectly love what my career with such background (degree) has become. However, there sometimes comes a point when I wonder “what if” I pursued my first plan. Perhaps I could be working in the top accounting firms abroad by now or maybe in a Las Vegas accounting firm which most of my CPA friends are yearning to work for. It’s just not one of my priorities now but returning to school to acquire a masteral degree has always been a long time dream and a long term goal. When things get settled in a year or two with my motherhood duties, hopefully, I can enroll myself and pursue a Business or Finance related masteral course. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce major in Business Administration and since I have immense interest in the internet and computers, I’m looking at financial engineering as a possible option. A masteral course in Business Administration may also be a good choice but I’m thinking of going back to the corporate world and land into a quant job in the banking and finance operations like I used to.

Financial engineering or computational finance course may sound new or uncommon but actually, workers in this field have been around in the workforce for years now. It’s just that this cross-disciplinary field was made more detailed and focused on computational intelligence, mathematical finance, numerical methods and computer simulations as technology (sotware and computer) also advances.
