On Retirement and Business Plans.

My 63 year old OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) Dad is finally thinking of his retirement by next year. We’ve been convincing him to stop working ever since he turned 60 but the workaholic in him prodded him to continue with his engineering career which truly is his passion. Even when he’s on vacation here back home, he always brings with him some works, communicates with his bosses and even accepts some sideline works. That’s how workaholic he is!

Anyway, as he’s thinking of going home for good next year, he’s thinking of business that he can undertake upon his return. Our youngest sibling has just graduated with a Commerce degree and they can work on it together. Among the numerous business opportunities out there, he’s inclined to engage with food business. He wants to explore the business world of food franchising. My mom, on the other hand, is thinking of enrolling in a pastry and baking classes then put up a bake shop. They can start small, rent a strategic place or if there’s none nearby, they can try to pursue it via concession trailers. This concept is interesting and I guess, more affordable, too. He said that he’ll study the options and go through the feasibility review thoroughly first.

We have a neighbor who’s into an automotive buy and sell business. He’s just young and I can say that he’s really decisive and brave. His marketing skills and know how about automotive is impressive. He doesn’t have a showroom and makes our street his parking space so we can see how fast the turnaround of his car sales is. New cars, new models can be seen each week. The reason is that he sells them at a very cheap price. He doesn’t put too much markup for each sale so in effect, his cars are way cheaper than the second hand ones sold in auto shops. Another secret that he has (which is no longer a secret because I know…and you do know now, too) is he buys old automobiles with used engines, upgrade and doll them up with new accessories, painting and any beautification process he may think of so he can sell them as good as new. He also told my husband (through which I’ve known his secret) that the used auto parts and used transmissions sometimes are also sold in Banawe, a shopping haven for car parts and accessories in Manila. So just imagine how he’s raking in enough profits and money with all the sales he has since early this year.

Marketing Management is among the Business subjects that I enjoyed the most in College. The subject itself is already an interesting topic and our beloved professor made it even more enjoyable and easier to understand by giving us business feasibility projects that we ourselves undertook from the planning until the end. It was challenging at the start but we were guided very closely that in the end, if only we have enough start up capital, we could have invested a business for real. One of the interesting parts and I must say the critical part of setting up a new business is the branding of the service or the product. The sales is largely dependent on how effective the brand and your advertising tool are.

The Package Design must not only be attractive and eye-catching. It should deliver right away all the things that they need to know about ythe product. A good branding confirms the credibility, establishes instant connection to the target, motivates the buyer and solidifies loyalty. When we take a look at a Coca Cola Logo Design, the trust is always there and no hint of any doubt or apprehension delimits our decision not to buy it, right?
