World Series of Poker Features Variations of the Game

Poker’s been around a long time. Elements of the game can be traced back to the 1600s, while poker as it’s now known originated in the late 1700s and early 1800s.  Since then, the game has developed into a family of card games. Among the best known are five-card and seven-card stud, five-card draw, and community card games, such as Texas hold’em or Omaha hold’em.  Draw poker features a full hand of cards being dealt to the players, while community card games include a certain number of cards dealt to the player, and the remaining number of cards being shared among the participants, or community. Gambling is an integral part of the game, whether it be for money or poker chips. Chips can be used simply as items for betting or as representations of money, as you’d find in casinos.

The granddaddy of all poker tournaments is the annual World Series of Poker (WSOP), which is held in, where else but Las Vegas, Nevada. Originating in 1970, the tournament beckons poker players from all over the world to compete for fame and millions in cash prizes. The World Series of Poker also awards a bracelet to the winner of each event, which is a revered and sought after prize in poker circles. Different variations of the game have been included in the WSOP over the years, and it now features a majority of the variants of poker.

Poker popularity has increased steadily since the 1970s, due specifically to tournaments such as the WSOP.  Many online poker sites offer tutorials and recreational poker games.

The World Series of Poker can best be followed through the WSOP Journal (http://www.wsopjournal.com). This website deals with all things poker. It offers tutorials for poker aficionados, such as explanations of the different variations of the game, links to sites where you can play for free, and “how to play” lessons.
