After the Filipinos mercilessly received the right hook punch of Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana), here comes another blow, probably a left hook this time courtesy of Typhoon Pepeng (Parma). The weather bureau alerted everyone to prepare as this super typhoon with winds of 195 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 235 kph is much stronger over Ondoy’s 85-kph center winds.
Parma’s strength is classified as Category 4 and according to the Saffir-Simpson damage scale, the potential damage it can cause at landfall are as follows:
* Curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failures on small residences.
* Shrubs, trees, and all signs are blown down.
* Complete destruction of mobile homes.
* Extensive damage to doors and windows.
* Low-lying escape routes may be cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the centre of the storm.
* Major damage to lower floors of structures near the shore.
* Terrain lower than 3 metres (10 feet) above sea level may be flooded requiring massive evacuation of residential areas as far inland as 10 km (6 miles). There is also the potential for flooding further inland due to heavy rain.
