Moan and Yawn.

Moan – /moʊn/ [mohn]
–noun
1. a prolonged, low, inarticulate sound uttered from or as if from physical or mental suffering.
2. any similar sound: the moan of the wind.
3. complaint or lamentation.
–verb (used without object)
4. to utter moans, as of pain or grief.

Yawn – /yɔn/ [yawn]
–verb (used without object)
1. to open the mouth somewhat involuntarily with a prolonged, deep inhalation and sighing or heavy exhalation, as from drowsiness or boredom.
2. to open wide like a mouth.
3. to extend or stretch wide, as an open and deep space.

There’s a big difference between a “moan” and a “yawn”. They’re not even homonyms as they sound differently.

Better check with your pre-schoolers their understanding of these two words. Their teacher could be as confused as the one I’ve overheard last week:

Teacher (talking to her Kinder class): “Moan…do you know what moan is? Ganito (opening mouth)..yung ginagawa natin pag inaantok.”
