A few weeks ago, a very bothersome Youtube video circulated in Facebook and I was so disturbed after watching it. It’s about a babysitter/nanny caught via a surveillance camera foolishly and mercilessly hurting a kid trusted under her care. As a mom, I couldn’t stand watching the video especially the part where she dragged the kid to the floor, fiercely kicked him several times and unsatisfied, she even stepped on the kid’s back putting her weight on the defenseless tiny body of the kid.
I also suddenly remembered Dindin Palma’s case, a 7 yr old child kidnapped and murdered last year and the primary suspect was her nanny.

As a Work-at-Home Mom, news like these make me feel blessed and relieved. Even though I have a helper who sees and attend to my child’s needs when I work, I am at peace because I can personally monitor how she takes care of him since I’m just at home. It’s much different if you have to leave the house to work and entrust your kid to someone else. For parents who are in this situation, they must meticulously do a background check before hiring a babysitter or a helper. For some, they hire sitters from manpower agencies. But with all the news and basing on personal experiences of my Mother-in-law from maids that she got from a manpower agency, I am adamant of considering such sources. There was one maid who, on her first day, managed to get away with stolen money and a cellphone in tow. My Mother-in-Law was so upset with the agency, but they just shrugged off the issue saying that it’s beyond their control.
NBI and Police Clearances can also be easily falsified, so these are useless means to guarantee one’s past records.
This is the reason why we’ve always opted to hire services of helpers through referrals of relatives in the province or by close friends. At least they can vouch a particular person’s character without doing an extensive criminal background check anymore.
US residents are lucky because they can conduct background checks online anytime through background databases to discover details about anyone they need. Not only it’s a quick and simple way of learning somebody’s history but it’s also a cool way of letting you play a detective role right from the computer.
